There is something special about waking up to the smell of freshly baked biscuits coming from the kitchen. Add garlic, herbs, butter, and Parmesan cheese, and an ordinary batch of biscuits becomes a savory breakfast that can make the entire morning feel a little more comforting.

Today’s Breakfast of the Day is Garlic and Herb Parmesan Biscuits—warm, tender biscuits packed with savory flavor and finished with a buttery garlic-herb topping.

These biscuits are delicious enough to eat by themselves, but they can also become part of a complete breakfast. Serve them alongside scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, or your favorite breakfast casserole. You can even split one open and turn it into a breakfast sandwich.

Best of all, homemade biscuits don’t have to be complicated.

Why Garlic and Herb Parmesan Biscuits Make a Great Breakfast

Traditional biscuits are already one of those foods that seem made for breakfast. They’re warm, buttery, filling, and incredibly versatile.

This version takes that familiar comfort food and gives it a savory upgrade.

Parmesan brings a salty, nutty flavor. Garlic adds richness and aroma. Herbs provide freshness, while butter brings everything together.

The result is a biscuit with plenty of flavor before you put anything else on it.

They’re also a good choice when you’re feeding several people. Make one batch, place the warm biscuits in a basket, and let everyone build their own breakfast.

Some people may want them with eggs.

Others may add bacon or sausage.

Someone else might simply grab a biscuit, spread a little butter over the center, and enjoy it with a cup of coffee.

There really isn’t a wrong way to eat one.

Garlic and Herb Parmesan Biscuits Recipe

Prep Time: About 15 minutes
Bake Time: 12–16 minutes
Total Time: About 30 minutes
Servings: Approximately 8–10 biscuits

Ingredients

For the biscuits:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 3/4 cup cold milk or buttermilk

For the garlic-herb butter topping:

  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease the baking sheet to prevent the biscuits from sticking.

2. Combine the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, salt, parsley, oregano, and thyme.

Stir everything together until the herbs and seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the flour.

Add the Parmesan cheese and mix again.

You should already begin smelling some of those wonderful savory ingredients.

3. Add the Cold Butter

Add the cubes of cold butter to the flour mixture.

Using a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

You should still be able to see small pieces of butter.

That’s a good thing.

Those cold pieces of butter melt while the biscuits bake, helping create tender layers.

Try not to work the mixture for too long. The warmer the butter becomes, the less flaky your biscuits may be.

4. Add the Milk

Pour the cold milk or buttermilk into the bowl.

Stir gently until the dough just begins to come together.

Avoid overmixing.

Biscuit dough doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth. In fact, mixing it too aggressively can make the finished biscuits tougher.

You want a soft, slightly shaggy dough.

5. Shape the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface.

Gently bring it together with your hands.

Pat the dough until it is approximately 3/4 to 1 inch thick.

For additional layers, you can gently fold the dough over itself two or three times before patting it down again.

Don’t knead it like bread dough.

The goal is to handle the dough as little as possible while still getting it to hold together.

6. Cut the Biscuits

Use a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass to cut the dough into rounds.

Press straight down rather than twisting the cutter.

Twisting can seal the edges of the dough and potentially prevent the biscuits from rising as well.

Place the biscuits on your prepared baking sheet.

For softer sides, position them so they’re almost touching.

For crispier edges, leave a little space between each biscuit.

7. Bake

Place the biscuits in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 12–16 minutes, or until they have risen and the tops are golden brown.

Cooking times can vary depending on your oven and the thickness of the biscuits, so begin checking them toward the lower end of the baking range.

8. Make the Garlic-Herb Butter

While the biscuits are baking, combine the melted butter, garlic powder, parsley, and Parmesan cheese in a small bowl.

Stir until combined.

9. Brush the Biscuits

As soon as the biscuits come out of the oven, brush the tops generously with the garlic-herb butter.

This final step adds another layer of flavor and gives the biscuits an irresistible buttery finish.

Serve them while they’re still warm.

Why Cold Butter Matters

One of the secrets to great homemade biscuits is temperature.

You want your butter cold.

When cold pieces of butter are trapped inside the biscuit dough, they melt during baking. As the water contained in the butter turns to steam, it helps create little pockets and layers inside the biscuit.

If your kitchen is particularly warm, you can even place your cubed butter in the refrigerator or freezer for several minutes before making the dough.

Cold milk or buttermilk can help for the same reason.

The colder you keep your ingredients before the biscuits enter the oven, the better chance you have of producing a light, tender biscuit.

Milk or Buttermilk?

Either one can work.

Regular milk produces delicious biscuits and is convenient because many people already have it in their refrigerator.

Buttermilk brings a slightly tangy flavor that pairs especially well with Parmesan, garlic, and herbs.

If you have buttermilk available, give it a try.

If you don’t, regular milk is perfectly fine.

Don’t Overwork Your Biscuit Dough

This may be the most important advice when making homemade biscuits.

Be gentle.

Once you add liquid to flour, gluten begins developing. Some gluten is necessary because it gives baked goods structure, but too much can result in a tougher biscuit.

Mix until everything is just combined.

The dough doesn’t need to look perfect.

Rustic-looking biscuit dough can produce some wonderful biscuits.

Make Them Even Cheesier

If you’re a serious cheese lover, Parmesan doesn’t have to be the only cheese in these biscuits.

Try adding shredded:

  • Sharp cheddar
  • Monterey Jack
  • Mozzarella
  • Gruyère
  • Pepper Jack

Cheddar and Parmesan make an especially good combination.

You could use about 1/2 cup Parmesan and add another 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar for an extra-cheesy version.

Pepper Jack can give the biscuits a mild spicy kick.

Add Fresh Herbs

Dried herbs are convenient because they can be stored in the pantry and used whenever you want to make a batch.

But fresh herbs can make these biscuits even better.

Try finely chopped fresh parsley, chives, rosemary, thyme, or basil.

Fresh rosemary is especially powerful, so you won’t need much.

You can also experiment with combinations until you find your favorite.

Garlic, Parmesan, parsley, and chives make a simple but delicious combination.

Turn Them Into Breakfast Sandwiches

One of the best things you can do with leftover Garlic and Herb Parmesan Biscuits is turn them into breakfast sandwiches.

Slice a biscuit horizontally and fill it with scrambled or fried eggs.

Then add your favorite breakfast ingredients.

You could make one with egg and cheddar.

Try egg, bacon, and cheese.

Make one with sausage and egg.

Or go with egg, spinach, tomato, and cheese.

You could even prepare several sandwiches ahead of time for busy mornings.

The garlic and Parmesan already give the biscuit plenty of flavor, so you don’t need many additional ingredients to create a satisfying breakfast.

What to Serve With Garlic and Herb Parmesan Biscuits

These biscuits can easily become the centerpiece of breakfast.

For a traditional breakfast, serve them with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, or breakfast potatoes.

If you’d prefer something lighter alongside them, add fresh fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, grapes, melon, or orange slices.

They also work beautifully with an omelet.

Try a spinach and mushroom omelet with a warm Parmesan biscuit on the side.

And don’t forget the coffee.

A hot cup of coffee and a warm biscuit brushed with garlic-herb butter can be a pretty good way to start the day.

Make Biscuits and Gravy With Them

Here’s another idea.

Instead of using plain biscuits for biscuits and gravy, try these Garlic and Herb Parmesan Biscuits.

Prepare your favorite sausage gravy and spoon it over a warm biscuit that’s been split in half.

The creamy gravy combines with the garlic, herbs, butter, and Parmesan for an incredibly rich breakfast.

It certainly isn’t the lightest breakfast around, but sometimes breakfast is about comfort.

Add Some Heat

If you enjoy spicy foods, there are several ways to give these biscuits a little kick.

Add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the dry ingredients.

Mix in some crushed red pepper flakes.

Add diced jalapeños.

Use Pepper Jack cheese.

Or drizzle a little hot honey over a warm biscuit.

Hot honey may sound unusual with Parmesan and garlic, but the combination of sweet, spicy, salty, and savory flavors can work surprisingly well.

Can You Make Drop Biscuits Instead?

Absolutely.

If you don’t want to roll and cut the dough, make Garlic and Herb Parmesan drop biscuits.

Prepare the dough as directed, but instead of shaping and cutting it, scoop portions directly onto your baking sheet.

Bake until they’re golden and cooked through.

Drop biscuits won’t have exactly the same shape or layers as traditional cut biscuits, but they’re incredibly easy.

They’re a great option when you want homemade biscuits without spending much time preparing them.

How to Store Leftover Biscuits

If you have leftovers, allow the biscuits to cool completely before storing them.

Place them in an airtight container and keep them at room temperature for a day or two, or refrigerate them for several days.

For longer storage, freeze them.

Place cooled biscuits in a freezer-safe container or bag.

When you’re ready to eat one, thaw it and warm it in the oven, toaster oven, or microwave.

For the best texture, reheating biscuits in an oven or toaster oven is usually preferable to microwaving them.

Brush a little additional melted butter over the top after reheating if you want to bring back some of that freshly baked flavor.

A Breakfast Worth Slowing Down For

Mornings can become incredibly rushed.

The alarm goes off.

We check our phones.

We think about everything that needs to get done.

We grab something quick—or skip breakfast completely—and start moving.

But occasionally, it’s worth slowing the morning down.

Make some coffee.

Turn on the oven.

Mix a bowl of biscuit dough.

Let the smell of butter, garlic, Parmesan, and herbs fill the kitchen.

Then sit down and enjoy breakfast instead of treating it like another item on the day’s checklist.

Food doesn’t always have to be complicated to create a comforting moment.

Sometimes a warm homemade biscuit is enough.

Breakfast of the Day

Garlic and Herb Parmesan Biscuits combine everything you could want from a savory breakfast biscuit: buttery layers, Parmesan cheese, garlic, herbs, and a warm homemade texture.

Eat them straight from the oven.

Split one open and add butter.

Turn one into a bacon-and-egg breakfast sandwich.

Serve them alongside scrambled eggs and fruit.

Or cover them with sausage gravy for a hearty weekend breakfast.

However you serve them, make sure you enjoy at least one while it’s still warm.

Because there’s a big difference between a biscuit from a package and one that has just come out of your own oven.

Would you eat your Garlic and Herb Parmesan Biscuits by themselves, with eggs and bacon, or covered in sausage gravy?
