There are ordinary shots, and then there are shots that seem like they were summoned from somewhere beneath the waves.

Today’s Shot of the Day is the Cthulhu Shot, a dark, mysterious, slightly unsettling drink inspired by one of the most recognizable creatures in cosmic horror.

With a deep green appearance, a touch of sweetness, a little tropical flavor, and enough liquor to remind you that some mysteries are better left unexplored, the Cthulhu Shot is perfect for Halloween parties, horror movie nights, themed gatherings, or any evening when you want something considerably stranger than another round of tequila.

Turn down the lights.

Put on some creepy music.

And whatever you do, don’t stare into the glass for too long.

Something might stare back.

What Is Cthulhu?

Cthulhu is a fictional cosmic entity created by horror writer H. P. Lovecraft and famously featured in his 1928 story The Call of Cthulhu.

The creature is commonly depicted as an enormous being with a vaguely humanoid body, wings, claws, and an octopus-like head covered in tentacles. Cthulhu became one of the defining figures of what is now commonly called cosmic horror—a style of horror centered around humanity confronting forces so ancient, enormous, and incomprehensible that they challenge our understanding of reality itself.

That makes Cthulhu excellent inspiration for a Halloween drink.

Rather than making an ordinary green shot, we’re going for something that looks like it might have been poured from a bottle discovered inside a shipwreck at the bottom of the Pacific.

The Cthulhu Shot

Ingredients

  • 1/2 ounce Midori melon liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce coconut rum
  • 1/2 ounce blue curaçao
  • Splash of pineapple juice
  • Small splash of grenadine
  • Ice

Optional Garnish

  • Green sanding sugar
  • Black sanding sugar
  • Gummy tentacles or gummy worms
  • Lime wedge

The combination creates a sweet, fruity shot with melon, coconut, citrus, and pineapple flavors.

The grenadine is where things get interesting.

Instead of completely mixing it into the drink, carefully adding a small amount at the end can create dark red streaks through the green-blue mixture, giving the shot a much more sinister appearance.

How to Make the Cthulhu Shot

Fill a cocktail shaker about halfway with ice.

Add the Midori, coconut rum, blue curaçao, and pineapple juice.

Shake vigorously for approximately 10–15 seconds.

Strain the mixture into a shot glass.

Then carefully add just a few drops or a very small splash of grenadine.

Don’t stir it.

Allow the grenadine to sink naturally through the drink.

Depending on how the liquids settle, you’ll get swirling streaks of green, blue, and red that make every Cthulhu Shot look slightly different.

That’s part of the fun.

No two monsters need to look exactly alike.

Make the Glass Look Even Creepier

Presentation can turn this from a simple party shot into something people remember.

Before preparing the drink, run a lime wedge around the rim of the shot glass.

Dip the rim into green or black sanding sugar.

You can also mix the two colors together for a darker, swamp-like appearance.

Then make the drink normally.

For a Halloween party, place the finished shots on a black serving tray surrounded by fake cobwebs, plastic tentacles, LED candles, or other creepy decorations.

Just make sure decorations stay separate from anything people will actually consume.

What Does the Cthulhu Shot Taste Like?

Despite its sinister appearance, the Cthulhu Shot isn’t particularly frightening when it comes to flavor.

Midori provides a strong sweet melon flavor.

Coconut rum adds a smooth tropical note.

Blue curaçao contributes sweet citrus.

Pineapple juice ties the tropical flavors together, while the small amount of grenadine adds additional fruitiness and sweetness.

The result is almost deceptively approachable.

That’s actually perfect for the theme.

Something inspired by Cthulhu probably shouldn’t reveal everything about itself immediately.

It looks strange.

It looks dangerous.

Then you taste it and discover a surprisingly tropical drink.

Turn It Into a “Deep Sea” Cthulhu Shot

Want something darker?

You can create another version by using:

  • 1/2 ounce coconut rum
  • 1/2 ounce blue curaçao
  • 1/2 ounce melon liqueur
  • Small splash pineapple juice
  • Tiny splash cranberry juice

Shake the first four ingredients with ice and strain them into the glass.

Slowly drizzle the cranberry juice into the finished shot.

The cranberry juice can produce dark streaks throughout the green-blue liquid, making the drink look like something lurking beneath murky ocean water.

For an even creepier presentation, serve it under blue or green party lighting.

A Shot Made for Halloween

The Cthulhu Shot belongs at a Halloween party.

Imagine setting up an entire horror-themed shot station with several different drinks inspired by famous monsters, villains, and horror movies.

Then, sitting among all of them, is a tray filled with eerie green Cthulhu Shots.

You could even place a small sign beside them:

CTHULHU

Drink at your own risk.

That little bit of presentation immediately makes the drink more interesting.

People aren’t simply taking another shot.

They’re participating in the theme.

Perfect for a Horror Movie Marathon

The Cthulhu Shot also works well for a horror movie night.

Turn off most of the lights, grab some snacks, pick a lineup of creepy movies, and serve these between films.

You could build the entire evening around cosmic horror, sea monsters, supernatural creatures, or classic horror stories.

The drink doesn’t need an elaborate occasion, either.

Sometimes October is enough of an excuse.

Make a Non-Alcoholic Cthulhu Shooter

You can keep the creepy appearance without the alcohol.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce pineapple juice
  • 1/2 ounce lemon-lime soda
  • 1/2 ounce blue sports drink
  • Splash of green fruit punch
  • Few drops grenadine

Shake the pineapple juice, blue drink, and green punch with ice.

Strain into a shot glass.

Top with a little lemon-lime soda and carefully add a few drops of grenadine.

You’ll still get the strange green-blue color and creepy red streaks without alcohol.

This is a good alternative when you’re serving a mixed group and want everyone to have a themed drink.

Make a Whole Cthulhu Cocktail

If you enjoy the flavors but don’t want to finish the experience in a single sip, turn the recipe into a full cocktail.

Try:

  • 1 ounce coconut rum
  • 1 ounce Midori
  • 1 ounce blue curaçao
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1 ounce lemon-lime soda
  • Splash of grenadine

Shake everything except the soda and grenadine with ice.

Strain into an ice-filled glass.

Top with lemon-lime soda.

Finish with a small drizzle of grenadine.

Garnish with a lime wedge.

Now you’ve got something you can sip while contemplating the terrifying insignificance of humanity in an unknowable universe.

Or while watching a horror movie.

Whichever sounds more relaxing.

Make a Batch for a Party

If you’re serving several people, making every shot individually gets old quickly.

For approximately eight shots, combine:

  • 4 ounces Midori
  • 4 ounces coconut rum
  • 4 ounces blue curaçao
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice

Chill the mixture thoroughly.

When you’re ready to serve, pour it into individual shot glasses and add a few drops of grenadine to each glass.

Adding the grenadine individually is worth the extra effort because it helps preserve the creepy layered appearance.

The Secret Is Presentation

The recipe itself is simple.

What makes the Cthulhu Shot memorable is everything surrounding it.

Halloween drinks are one of those occasions where you’re allowed to be theatrical.

Use unusual lighting.

Give your drinks creepy names.

Decorate the serving area.

Create handwritten warning signs.

Put dry ice nearby for atmosphere—but never put dry ice into a drink that will be consumed until it has completely sublimated, because swallowing solid dry ice can cause serious injury.

Even the music playing in the background can contribute to the experience.

A drink called Cthulhu deserves more than being casually poured on the kitchen counter.

Give the ancient monster a proper introduction.

Shot of the Day: Cthulhu

Sweet.

Tropical.

Strange.

And just unsettling enough for Halloween.

The Cthulhu Shot combines melon liqueur, coconut rum, blue curaçao, pineapple, and grenadine into a colorful little drink inspired by one of horror fiction’s most enduring monsters.

Serve it at a Halloween party.

Make it during a horror marathon.

Add it to a lineup of monster-themed drinks.

Or pour one on a dark October night when you’re looking for something different.

Just remember one thing.

When you raise your glass, you may think you’re drinking to Cthulhu.

But somewhere in the darkness beneath the waves…

Cthulhu may be drinking to you.

Would you try the Cthulhu Shot, or is this one creature you’d rather leave sleeping beneath the sea?

Please drink responsibly. Never drink and drive.
